Border Surveillance

Area 51 uses the latest technology to ensure that prying eyes stay out–they didn’t come all the way out in the desert to put on a show, and they spend millions each year to keep their secret alive.

As soon as you vehicle hits the asphalt of Highway 375, there’s a good chance that the long-range-remote cameras on Bald Mountain are following your movements. If you make the turn down Groom Lake Road, Area 51 security (known as the cammo dudes) will be following your movements for the next 13 miles of well-maintained dirt road. They specially grate the roads to create a large plum of dust–so that you can be easily tracked. By the time you make it to the front gates, they will probably already know if you are supposed to be there, and will be in position if you try anything stupid.

And if the cameras and dust cloud were not enough, say, if you came at night and turned off your lights, they have several road sensors in place that will still alert the border of your approach.

When you get to the gates, several cameras are placed to record your plates, and be sure that several “cammo dudes” will be in place, waiting for your next move–even if you can’t see them.

And if you really cause them some worry, or arrive at the right time, you’ll get to see one of a few FLIR-equipped Sikorsky MH-60G Pave Hawk helicopters. Any way that you come about visiting the base, they will know you’re there, and they will be ready for action.
